Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic Dermatitis (SD) is a dermatologic condition called.  Most of us know it as dandruff but also affect the oily areas of the face, sides of the nose, eyebrows, ears, eyelids and chest.

The exact cause of the uncomfortable flaking, red scalp and itching is unknown. Research supports that dandruff may be a mild form of psoriasis or linked to how the body responds to a yeast called Malasezzia.

Dandruff is rarely harmful but, if severe enough, can cause hair-loss.  A mild form will easily respond to more frequent shampooing or a longer lathering period. More stubborn, advanced cases benefit from topical medications applied directly to the affected area.

There are numerous treatment methods available. Prescribed therapies range from shampoos to solutions to ointments containing anti-inflammatories, anti-fungal creams, and vitamin-D derivatives.  A combination approach may be needed for maximum resolution.  Explore your options for top dandruff treatments and tips at Chelsea Skin & Laser.
